GM Invests in Next-Generation V8 Engine for Trucks and SUVs

General Motors has announced a major $900 million (approximately ¥6.387 billion RMB) investment to develop a new generation of V8 engines. The initiative is part of the company’s long-term strategy to improve internal combustion technology alongside its electrification plans. Production of the new engine is expected to begin in 2027.

Target Models Include Silverado, Tahoe, and Yukon

The next-gen V8 engine will power several of GM’s top-performing full-size vehicles. Among the confirmed models are the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban, as well as the GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL. These vehicles represent some of the most in-demand products in GM’s lineup, particularly in the North American market.

Advanced Engineering for Better Performance and Efficiency

While GM has not released specific performance data, the company emphasized that the new engine will deliver noticeable gains across power, fuel economy, and emissions. Engineers are focusing on integrating new combustion technologies and thermal management systems to meet increasingly strict efficiency standards.

The current 5.3-liter V8 engine generates 355 horsepower and 519 Nm of torque. The 6.2-liter version goes further, offering 420 horsepower and 623 Nm. The next-generation V8 is expected to exceed these benchmarks while operating more efficiently under load.

Tonawanda Plant to Receive Significant Upgrades

The $900 million investment will also be used to upgrade GM’s Tonawanda engine plant in New York. This facility, which has been in operation for 87 years, is set to receive modern equipment and tooling to support the production of the new V8. The investment signals GM’s commitment to maintaining and modernizing its U.S. manufacturing base.
